I make my rods with single or double foot snake guides (your choice). The guides are hand wrapped with chromium in the color you select. Each wrap is tagged with gold or silver. I create my rods with an extra guide following the "one guide per foot" rule of thumb so that, on an 8' rod, I install nine guides. These additional guides (the factory rod only has eight guides) reduce line "slap" on the rod which reduces friction; the end result assists the angler in delivering longer and more accurate casts with my rods.
You can purchase one of my custom rods with the confidence that my 27 years of rod building expertise has been focused on creating your own personal rod. From the rod blank offerings to the hardware choices, from the exotic hardwoods used in the handles to the final fit and finish, your own Steve Moran rod puts exceptional quality and craft in your hands. Your rod is created to last a lifetime, bringing excellence and beauty to your fishing experience.
Each rod includes two graphics of your choosing. They can be any type of terrestrial insect, flying or crawling or a particular fly pattern. I hand draw them in ink on the rod and cover them with clear resin so they are protected from scratches and wear. Similarly, your name is written on the pole near the handle as a personalized finishing touch.
Many years ago, I began offering scrimshawed reel seats to my clientele as a customizing option. Initially, I used deer and elk antlers for the material; in the intervening time, due to the huge price increases in antlers (because of the demands of the aphrodisiac market), I have chosen to use a space-age plastic called Micarta. I did considerable research before settling on Micarta for this use; it offers several advantages over the antler bone. Micarta is much more durable than the antler and should last for many years while showing minimal wear. The material carves very well and has much of the same appearance as bone or ivory (it actually comes in several ivory-like colors). I offer many designs to choose from. I think that you'll agree, the results that I get using this material add an additional level of beauty to my rods.
